How to File Taxes as a University Student in Canada

Wondering how to file taxes as a student in Canada? You’re often not required to if you owe nothing — but you almost always should. Filing gets you the GST/HST credit, refunds any tax withheld from a part-time job, records your tuition credit (via the T2202) to use later or transfer, and starts building RRSP room. It’s free and takes about 30 minutes.

Do students need to file?

You must file if you owe tax or the CRA asks you to. You should file anyway to claim refunds and benefits. Most students with low income owe nothing because of the basic personal amount (around $16,100 for 2025) — income below it means no federal tax — but the credits and benefits only arrive if you file.

The 5 steps

1

Gather your slips. T4 (job income), T2202 (tuition from your school), and T4A (scholarships/bursaries). Download the T2202 from your student portal.

2

Pick free NETFILE-certified software. Several options are free for students; they file straight to the CRA.

3

Enter income, then tuition. Put the T2202 amount on line 32300 (Schedule 11) to claim the tuition credit.

4

Claim the credits. The basic personal amount and GST/HST credit apply automatically once you file; check eligibility for provincial credits too.

5

File by April 30. NETFILE submits it; keep your slips and confirmation number.

The tuition credit: use it, carry it, or transfer it

If you…Do this with the tuition amount
Owe tax this yearClaim it to reduce your tax (15% federal credit)
Owe little or nothingCarry the unused amount forward to a future year
Want to help familyTransfer up to $5,000 (current year) to a parent, grandparent, or spouse
Tuition credits never disappear — claim, carry forward, or transfer up to $5,000. File so the CRA tracks the carry-forward.
Even with zero income, file. It’s the only way to receive the GST/HST credit (a tax-free quarterly payment for lower incomes) and to register your tuition carry-forward. Filing also starts your RRSP contribution room for when you’re earning.
